A Visit From @EnglishJason and @mhattikudurOctober 25, 2013 at 1:00 PM | Posted in I ♥ Twitter., What's up? | 1 Comment
Y’all know about mental_floss, right? It’s a company that blurs the line between education and entertainment. There’s a deliciously nerdy magazine filled with facts, fascinating stories, various lists, and quizzes; Ken Jennings wrote a column for it. John and Hank Green do the YouTube channel. There are games and shirts and books too.
I don’t remember where I came across my first issue of the magazine but INSTANTLY I loved it. And so did Bill. He asked for subscriptions for Christmas for a couple of years and we both benefited. It was a hard decision to not renew the subscription eventually but we did so in a commitment to have less stuff come into the house. (We battle clutter. Okay, I battle clutter. The clutter is mostly mine.) But, BUT, I keep up with the website by following @mental_floss on Twitter. I also follow some of the guys behind the scenes, like Jason and Ethan and Mangesh. And I have purchased merchandise as gifts before, too.
So you can imagine my excitement when Jason tweeted that he and Mangesh were taking a road trip to Indy. (Well, if you know me + you now know this story you can imagine it.) I suggested a tweet-up! Surely there are other mental_floss fans in the Circle City, right? So I kept in touch with him to get updates—there were rumors of a pizza party—but they just couldn’t fit it in. <sad trombone> To be honest, I suspected as much when I didn’t see any announcements. I mean, it was a tweet-up and not a flash mob so some warning would be necessary. Anywho, I was disappointed. Bill had been out of town for a few days and I was looking forward to a social outing to boost my spirits.
But then Jason turned my frown upside down! He let me know the next morning that they could swing by on their way out of town to say hello and drop off some swag. Sweet, right? I brushed my teeth, got dressed, and prepared to make a good impression. My inclination was to pack them snacks and lunch for the long ride but the cupboard wasn’t stocked well, so no crackers or lunch meat sandwiches for them. Oh, well. I decided to give them jars of peach peel jelly and candied jalapeños, though—not for snacking per se but as a gesture of friendliness and gratitude.
Jason and Mangesh stayed for only a few minutes but they were super friendly and gave me armloads of merchandise (plus one high five). I really enjoyed meeting them and wished there were more time to hang out. At a tweet-up I would’ve asked all kinds of questions about the company and the magazine and who knows what else but at my house, with only a few minutes, we ended up talking mostly about Goocher. (Pretend you’re surprised, those who know me.) Turns out Jason’s dog needs ACL surgery and The Goochmonster had that a few months ago and happening upon that coincidence drove (most of) the conversation.
If there were any way I could love mental_floss more then these two dorks in crazy glasses made it so. I hope work brings them to Indy again and next time there will be a chance to hang out longer (and with food).
